Merry Christmas everyone!  Here is some winter fun!

I got tired of the typical “hey.. lets put on the Peanuts Christmas Soundtrack and be like Wes Anderson” type posts.  So instead, here are 3 songs from the classic Disney short, Once Upon A Wintertime. As an added bonus I am also putting up Christmas with the Chipmunks.  I know it’s not Disney, but hey.. I am in the giving mood :)

Round in these here parts of Texas, a good ol’ bootleg DVD of Disney’s Song Of The South is pretty easy to find (if you knows where to look).  I actually stumbled upon a man who had a whole trade booth dedicated to just this movie!  If you are a Southy nut like I am, head on over to this site for everything SOTS. 

I really wanted to put this soundtrack out there for FREE, since nobody else will.  As Uncle Remus always said “bootleggins should nun cost you more den ya boots, nor ya leggins!”

Once again there are 11 tracks in a Zip file.  All tracks are AIFF.  I left off two instrumentals “Ginny and Johnny” and “Uncle Remus Leaves”.  All other songs are included.  I even did a special edit of “All I Want” removing all the talking that was over the song.  Enjoy!

The working title for Three Caballeros had to be “HORNY BIRDS HOT FOR LATINA TAIL”.  This whole movie is girl chasing fiesta madness….which basically makes it the greatest Donald Duck movie of all time! 

Starting with this post, I am going to be doing a weekly series on unreleased, rare Disney music. It will consist of songs that are not available anywhere.  I have found a few on vinyl, but they are usually remakes for story readers and not the original recordings from the films.  Since the vinyl quality is pretty poor, I decided to get these songs right off the movies themselves.

This is my own personal way of giving the stiff middle finger to the Disney corporation for screwing us out of the greatest music ever.  So many people love these songs, and it’s a shame that they will probably never be released. For some reason, Michael Eisner seems to think that we only want to buy new crappy Disney music by Elton John or Phil Collins.  No thanks Michael… I’ll pass.  

In making these albums, I did leave out a lot of instrumental music.  I stuck mainly to the essential songs. The soundtrack to Three Caballeros sounds like a long lost Desi Arnaz record.  And just for you halloweiners out there… I decided to throw in the Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. Bing Crosby’s crooner vocals will leave you smiling for sure.  Feel free to send me some thank you candies for this.

Ingredients:

Nilla wafers
Banana slices
Peanut Butter

Creat a little sandwich by spreading peanut butter on the wafers.. then put banana slice in between. Dip it in batter and deep fry it following these instructions.

There are really only 2 periods I love of Elvis. 54′-56′ Elvis and 68 comeback special Elvis. The rest is just fluff or deep fried fat with bad sunglasses.

‘68 Elvis formed the basis for how I wanted my backing group to be. It was loosey goosey, colored with inside jokes, and filled with plenty of fun. When I first started playing shows in Dallas, I played acoustic guitar with one drummer, forcing him to only use a snare with brushes.. no drumkit allowed! Eventually I added more members to the group resulting in The All-Nighters. If you have ever been to my live shows.. you can see that we try our best to capture the essence of the ‘68 comeback special.

Songs they gave away

I wish I had songs I could give away…. unfortunately I can’t churn them out like the Beatles factory did.  Some of the songs they wrote for others were pretty craptastic.. but suprisingly many of these tunes became huge hits! Then there are the songs that maybe the Beatles shouldn’t have given away. I obviously love the Mccartney tracks more, but his are definitely the stronger songs.

Funny Beatles factoid; when Paul would play World Without Love, as he sang the lyric “please lock me away”, John would always be quick to respond “ok”. Classic John.

Paul wanted to give this song to Frank Sinatra but ol’ Blue eyes thought that the song was a joke and reportedly said “Is this guy trying to have me?”. Frank is pretty dumb cus this song could have been a Sinatra classic.

Hands down.. Harry Nilsson is on my top ten list as a direct musical influence. And as far as childhood movies go, Popeye (Robin Williams 1st film) leads the pack in greatness. So obviously I was more than pleased to learn that these two were connected together via some strange, sea-shanty cold fusion. I dug into teh internets to find out just how this came to be. Here’s what I unearthed:

“For Robert Altman’s 1980 film Popeye, he recruited Harry Nilsson to do the songs and Van Dyke Parks to do the film score. The songs were sung in the film by the characters, a la any musical, but the original demos of Harry singing them still exist.

Apparently Harry was not the clear cut choice to do the songs according to Altman, “Nobody wanted him at first except Robin Williams. Everyone said ‘You’ll get in trouble with him — he’ll get drunk; he won’t do it; he’s all washed up.’ As a matter of fact I said all of those things about Harry to Robin myself one day. Then I went home and thought about it and said to myself, ‘Jesus, that’s what some people are saying about me!’ So I called Harry Nilsson, because I had never met him in my life, and we got along terrifically.”

If you don’t know much about Harry Nilsson, just do yourself a favor and click here or here and I promise you will be dazzled. Plus you can laugh at how I shamelessly rip him off!  There is a reason the Beatles said Nilsson was their favorite “group”.. and favorite solo artist :)

First things first…SORRY, SORRY, SORRY! I know I have neglected this blog for a over a month. I was out on tour and the blog itself had some technical issues I had to fix. But all of these things have been resolved and we are back on track! yay!

I just wanted to post today on a few bands that you may or may not have heard of from the hey day of the mid-90’s britpop era. 97′ was the great and final year of britpop before it really died, and there were many bands that snuck in and said goodbye before you really knew who they were. While the U.S was busy with watered down versions of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam bands, the Uk was busy with watered down versions of Oasis, Blur, and Pulp.

The first of these was Rialto. They completely sound like if Oasis and Pulp were mashed together to make James Bond theme music. The next is The Supernaturals (For some reason it seems like there were a million “super” bands in the 90’s). This band in particular was written off by the british press but they really write some amazing pop tunes and had quite a few hits. Then there is Space.. you probably remember them from the Austin Powers soundtrack. And finally, the band Polara isn’t british but I feel their sound fit well enough in that genre. Surprisingly all of these groups are still around in one way or another. Just go to wikipedia to find out what they are up to. I am too lazy today for links.. haha.

Every now and then, I sometimes forget what RocknRoll is really all about. When those days happen, I quickly run to my computer and turn on the TOY DOLLS. Suddenly, like a bolt of lightning, I remember what the missing ingredient is…. FUN!

The TOY DOLLS represent everything a true punk band should aspire to be. Many “pure” punk rockers discard this band as simply a novelty act.. but I guarantee that you will be hard pressed to find any successful punk band not list them as an influence.

I have a great story about my 7th grade science teacher (who was 23 and smoking hot) all impressed that I listened to the Toy Dolls. I thought I was the shiznit until she said she couldn’t wait to go home and tell her BOYFRIEND! (noooo!!) At the time, she was like 6 feet tall and I was like barely 4′11″, so I don’t think our love was destined to happen.
